Stretching lengthens muscle tissue and improves joint range of motion through several mechanisms: viscoelastic deformation of muscle fibres, increased stretch tolerance via nervous system adaptation, and improved sarcomere alignment in series. The type of stretch you choose determines which mechanism dominates.

A meta-analysis in peer-reviewed sports literature found that static stretching programmes over several weeks, performed three to five times per week with 30–60 second holds, were associated with flexibility changes in healthy adults. Dynamic stretching is generally used before activity rather than as the sole long-term approach.

Desk-Friendly Stretching Routines

Sedentary work compresses the spine, shortens hip flexors, and rounds the shoulders forward. A five-minute mobility break every 45–60 minutes counteracts these patterns without requiring a change of clothes or equipment.

  1. Seated spinal twist — feet flat, rotate torso to each side, hold 20 seconds. Mobilises thoracic spine.
  2. Neck lateral flexion — ear toward shoulder, opposite hand gently assists. Hold 20 seconds each side.
  3. Scapular squeeze — pull shoulder blades together, hold 5 seconds, release. Repeat 10 times.
  4. Standing hip flexor stretch — lunge position, tuck pelvis under, hold 30 seconds each side.

PNF Stretching Overview

Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation involves a cycle: stretch the muscle, contract it isometrically against resistance for 6–10 seconds, then stretch further. This technique leverages reciprocal inhibition — when the agonist contracts, the antagonist relaxes — allowing slightly greater range. Best learned with a partner or qualified instructor initially.
